Extended reality technologies like Virtual-Reality (VR), Augmented-Reality (AR), and Mixed-Reality (MR) are shaping a more intuitive environment where physical (real) and virtual worlds are integrated and blended by computer generated human and machine interactions.
“Facebook Horizon” is a next generation social networking application for VR where users can create a digital virtual world to play and interact. (Warc, 2021). MIT Game lab’s Collaborative Learning Environments in Virtual Reality, or CLEVR is a great leap in terms of learning management systems. Azure mixed reality is a cloud-based solution for creating Mixed reality applications for Microsoft HoloLens which blends the 3D graphics to the real world. AltspaceVR bought by Microsoft is building a mixed reality community. Massive growth of online multiplayer games like Pubg, Fortnite, Minecraft all has made the technology feasible to use in industrial scale. The popularity of map based multiplayer games like PUBG, COD , Fortnight support the argument for the importance of spatial and position awareness for consistent adoption of technology.
US army used 360 VR experience for giving a taste of soldier’s life to the new generation who had a trust issue with respect to mis conceptions. This process in familiarisation caused recruitment rate to go up by 12 times. As a special operations soldier in VR they infiltrated enemy lines, experienced EOD technician’s heart pounding walk, UAS Operator (Drone Pilot), tank operator jobs etc. (Warc, 2021)
Pokeman Go became a cultural phenomenon and players can visit “PokéStops” (like coffee shops, stores and museums) to “capture” the specific critter that is associated with each venue(Warc, 2016).
The 5G network is going to make a profound improvement to Mixed reality applications as the network latency and frame per second are the main performance units for XR applications. Improved hardware power and lowering cost is another factor that will help XR applications to be more commercially viable in the coming days.
The global mixed reality market is growing rapidly and accounted for US$ 155.85 Mn in 2020 and is expected to grow to US$ 3417.64 Mn in 2029 at a CAGR of 53.9% throughout the forecast period 2019 to 2029” (Business wire, 2021). Industry spending on Mixed reality is well above the consumer spending which shows the trend in this technology. Total spending on XR is estimated to jump from $4 billion to $121 in 2018 to in 2023 versus consumer spending from $5 billion to $40 billion in the same period. Key areas of investment are seen in health care, training, manufacturing (Laurence Morven et al, 2019). Investment in mixed reality start-ups have seen 237% growth in recent years.
Key Trends in XR
- Technology Innovations: Industries moving beyond gaming and entertainment, VR-Aided Retail Shopping is picking up, XR took off in healthcare industry, VR gears are getting portable, smaller and powerful
- Better resource utilization: VR application can enhance human decision-making process as information are processed in 3D visuals (HBR, 2017)
- Social Trends: VR in Training and Education (Accurate Learning Without Risk),VR-Aided Retail Shopping (Shop Retail at Home),Entertaining Consumers With Virtual Reality (Experience Reality Remotely),Online Collaboration (VR Becomes a Social Norm), Tourism and Travel (Experience Destinations Before Booking)
- Value-added factors: Design thinking is customer-oriented development where the consumer is put at front. (Brown, Tim, 2019)
